Slavery in Newton County

Thousands of persons of color were enslaved in Newton County from the county's founding in 1821 until late 1864, when General Sherman's forces liberated all those enslaved in the area.

In 1830 Newton county had 513 slave owners. In 1850, 5,187 persons were held in slavery by 647 slave owners.

In 1860, according the U.S. Census slave schedule (the last census before emancipation) 6,460 persons were enslaved, by 756 slave owners..
